Transport to Tübingen

Travel by air

The nearest international airport is Stuttgart. If you arrive on a flight to Stuttgart, the best connection to Tübingen is by bus line 828, which leaves directly outside the terminal and goes to Tübingen main train station (Tübingen Hbf).

Larger, and within reach of a 2–3-hour train ride from Tübingen, is Frankfurt International Airport. The best connection from there to Tübingen is via an ICE train from Frankfurt airport to Stuttgart main station, then from there with a local train. See Travel by rail for more information.

Travel by rail

Detailed train information is available on the website of Deutsche Bahn. Use the pulldown on the top of that page to select your preferred language, then enter your starting station (e.g., “Frankfurt Flughafen”) and end station (“Tübingen Hauptbahnhof”) in the relevant fields.

IMPORTANT: Due to construction work, many train connections between Stuttgart and Tübingen are cancelled!

If you are planning to take a train from Stuttgart main station to Tübingen, make sure that your connection is available. Last week (!), the Deutsche Bahn announced that many of those connections will be cancelled between Sept 15 and Sept 22. Make sure that you check the availability of your connection or find alternatives on the Deutsche Bahn website.

Tübingen’s main train station is south of the city center, where the conference takes place (approx. 15 minutes on foot). Also, most hotels are within walking distance from the main train station (see Accommodation and interactive map).

Taxis

Several taxi companies serve Tübingen, some offer special rates for the transfer from and to Stuttgart airport or Stuttgart main train station.

Note that there is no Uber or such in Germany - Free Now is what probably comes closest: Like Uber, it allows you to book trips and estimates the costs, but it operates usually with taxi cabs.

Public transport

All conference sites and most hotels are within walking distance of each other (see interactive map).

Tübingen has also an excellent public transportation system. Information on bus connections can be found on the Naldo website (German only).

In addition, there are several companies renting e-scooters and/or e-Bikes (e.g., Tier).

Accommodation

Tübingen is a small city and, especially in fall, a major draw for tourists. Therefore, hotel rooms are limited, and we strongly recommend booking your accommodation as soon as possible.

We were able to pre-book several hotel rooms for the meeting, but this number is limited. We will send the respective booking codes in the registration confirmation email.

Note that rates listed below are subject to change and given in € per day and room (SR, single room; DR, double room). Please be aware that hotel costs have to be covered by the participants.

A complete list of hotels, private rooms, apartments and even campsites in Tübingen can be found on the webpage of the tourist office (German only).

Arrival & Badge pickup

Please pick up your name badge at the registration / information desk, which will be open on:

  • Sunday, Sept 17, from 17:00 – 20:00 (at Freistil Brewery during the get-together)
  • Monday, Sept 18 and Tuesday, Sept 19 from 8:00 – 16:00 (at Audimax / lecture hall during the lecture sessions).

On Sunday Sept 17, the Tübingen Erbe run takes place in the city. During the day, the town center will be closed to traffic. In addition, on Sunday Sept 17, it’s the last day of a specialty market (Umbrisch-provenzalischer Markt), which brings many tourists to Tübingen.

These events hopefully won’t affect your arrival, but please be aware that the town will be very crowded on that Sunday. If you arrive early, please enjoy the lively city!
